Welcome to Calioh Coffee – Your Partner in Building Successful Coffee Programs

We’re coffee operators first.

That means we’ve hired, trained, scheduled, repaired, rebuilt, missed sleep, chased parts, dealt with inspectors, and made payroll—just like you. We don’t advise from the sidelines. We build and run real coffee businesses every day.

If your systems feel fragile, your training doesn’t scale, or your equipment and bar layout are slowing your team down, you’re not alone—and you’re not stuck.

Every challenge we’ve faced in our own cafés forced us to either engineer a better solution or adopt one that actually worked in the real world. Over time, those solutions became systems. Those systems became repeatable. And now we share them with other operators who want fewer fires and more forward progress.

Our goal is simple: stop sharing struggles across the industry—and start sharing success.

About Us

Calioh Coffee was built by operators, but it was shaped by service long before coffee entered the picture.

Our founder, Matt Powers, spent 20 years as a firefighter—most of his adult life—in a profession centered on showing up for others on their worst days. That background didn’t just teach urgency and discipline; it instilled a deep, almost reflexive instinct to help first and figure out the rest later.

Sometimes, that instinct has come at his own expense—or the company’s. Matt has a well-documented habit of pouring himself into helping others before helping himself. But that philosophy has always been intentional: provide real value, earn trust through action, and believe that if you do the right work long enough, your time will come.

That same mindset carried into coffee.

Over the last 10 years, Matt hasn’t just built cafés and a roastery—he’s watched dozens of coffee operators navigate the same terrain. Some succeeded. Some struggled. Some failed outright. The difference was rarely passion or talent. It was systems, decisions, and whether they were willing to listen when it mattered.

Hard lessons in business are expensive—financially, emotionally, and personally. So Calioh began doing something deliberate: observing, documenting, testing, and refining. Learning not only from our own mistakes, but from patterns we saw repeated across the industry. We focused on avoiding known pitfalls while leaning forward with practical technology, simplified equipment strategies, and standardized training that actually works in real cafés.

Calioh doesn’t do anything flashy. That’s intentional.

What we do is implement—or engineer—what every successful business needs: clear systems, repeatable processes, and tools that reduce friction instead of adding complexity. We mimic what works. We build what doesn’t yet exist. And we avoid, at all costs, what consistently fails.

Everything we learn is recorded, refined, and shared—through our B2B partnerships and our content—so operators don’t have to pay the same tuition we did.

Five years into the business, Matt met Nallely.

She came in knowing nothing about coffee—but everything about commitment. When she jumped in, she jumped all the way. Her introduction to the industry wasn’t gradual; she was volunteered into the deep end as a barista at Coffee Fest Anaheim. She took to it immediately.

From there, Nallely quietly did what she does best: observe, learn, and step in wherever the business needed her most. She helped build the Moorpark café with her own hands. She learned espresso extraction and latte art from the ground up. She evolved from site foreman to barista trainer—not through titles, but through competence and consistency.

Nallely helped drive the first nail into the boards that became our coffee bar. Today, she’s the glue that holds the operation together.

You’ll find her at the roastery as head roaster, and often at the café leading, training, and developing the team. Her journey—from knowing nothing about coffee to mastering it operationally—mirrors the path we build for others: learn fast, build solid foundations, and grow into excellence through repetition and care.

Calioh Coffee exists to share that path.

Not theory. Not trends. Real systems built by real operators who are still in it—every day.
